Stage is an AI-augmented live broadcast platform built to solve the Signal-to-Noise crisis in online discourse. Current platforms reward volume; Stage rewards value — shifting live Q&A from popularity contests to merit, where the best argument wins the stage.
August 2012. President Obama sits down for Reddit's biggest-ever AMA. The crowd's top-voted submission isn't a question — it's a link collection. A moderator note ranks third. Meanwhile, the question behind his most-remembered answer of the entire session — a recent law-school graduate asking about drowning in student debt — sat buried where vote ranking left it. He could only answer what the ranking showed him.
We rebuilt that AMA on Stage. Ranked by substance instead of applause, the buried questions lead the queue — from the second they're submitted, before a single vote arrives. Then we ran a second decade, different host: Bill Gates, 2023. Same engine, untouched — nine of Stage's top ten were questions he actually chose to answer.
In that same AMA, a U.S. Army Reservist — nearly six years in uniform — wrote a personal, specific question about what his unit was living through. It finished with three upvotes, ranked #66, invisible. When our engine scores that question's idea density, it comes out at 0.85 — identical to the #1 question on the merit ranking. The substance was there. The visibility lottery buried it in its first five minutes, and vote ranking never looked back.
That soldier is in every audience. Podcasts and webinars carry great speakers to passive crowds; social feeds let everyone speak and no one be heard. Stage replaces "loudest first" with earned speech: the right to the speaker's attention is earned through the quality and substance of the contribution — judged in real time, blind to follower counts, timing, or mob momentum.
Reddit never gave this question its first five minutes. Stage does — on substance, it leads the feed from the second it's submitted.— from the proof-of-concept evaluation
Social Media 1.0 connected everyone and optimized for engagement — and got brawls, hive minds, and empty chairs. Stage is built for what comes next: optimizing for cognition. Four integrated AI systems curate the room in real time:
| The old way | The Stage way |
|---|---|
| First come, first served — most upvotes wins | Highest intellectual density wins |
| Popularity contests | Merit-based ranking |
| Maximize engagement | Maximize cognition |
| The loudest voice wins | The best argument wins |
